Aside from yoga, my degree in environmental science has led me to various types of workplace settings over the years. From office jobs to labor intensive field work, I have always found my way back to my mat after long days on the job. No matter what type of activity fills the majority of your day, yoga can help relieve stress, unwind, and refocus on what really matters in life.
My work experiences have inspired me to provide yoga to workplace environments. Jobs are inherently stressful at least to some degree. When stress levels are high, productivity typically drops. Yoga can help improve mental health, and these benefits of yoga span across multiple workplace settings. In a 2018 publication, titled, Increased Mental Well-Being and Reduced State Anxiety in Teachers After Participation in a Residential Yoga Program, published in Medical Science Monitor Basic Research, the study found that a 15 day yoga program offered to teachers in a workplace resulted in reduced stress levels and feelings of anxiety (Telles, et al). In a 2015 notable publication, titled, Yoga for Self-Care and Burnout Prevention Among Nurses, published in Workplace Health & Safety, nurses who participated in an 8-week yoga program reported decreases in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization in the workplace (Gina K. Alexander, PhD, MPH, MSN, RN1, et al). Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization are two signs of workplace burnout. In a 2012 comparative study of industrial workers, the 100 employees that participated in a 12 week yoga program had statistically significant improvement in psychological well-being compared to the 100 employees that did not receive the 12 week yoga program (Bhat PS, et al).
Jobs are also inherently taxing on the physical body. Whether sitting at a desk all day or working on a factory line, our jobs require us to position our bodies in specific ways for hours on end. Couple that with our focus on completing the task at hand, and our bodies become stiff and sore. Overtime, these aches and pains can turn into bigger medical concerns like arthritis, carpal tunnel, and chronic back pain. Yoga stretches our muscles and makes us stronger. Results from a 2013 study, titled, Effect of an office worksite-based yoga program on heart rate variability: outcomes of a randomized controlled trial, found that office workers practicing yoga regularly for 10 weeks on their lunch break had increased muscular flexibility and strength in comparison to the control group (Cheema et al). In a 2017 review paper published in Occupational Medicine, Cost-effectiveness of yoga for managing musculoskeletal conditions in the workplace, the study found that an 8-week yoga class offered in a workplace resulted in reduction in accounts of back pain with the employees who participated in the yoga program (N. Hartfiel, et al.). In addition to employees feeling better, the workplace also found the yoga program to be cost-effective when comparing the cost to offering the yoga program to the cost of employee absenteeism.
